Vella Island: the best kitesurfing spot in Sri Lanka

kite trip to Vella Island Kalpitiya-Sri Lanka

Since I landed to Sri Lanka for my kitesurfing holidays, I was really eager to make a kite trip to Vella Island kitesurfing spot. I have many friends who came before to Sri Lanka for kitesurfing and all of them told me that Vella island is the best kite spot in Sri Lanka and probably one of the best spots in the world. That´s why this time I decided to organise a kite trip to Sri Lanka and go to Vella Island

In order to get to Vella Island kite spot, I had to organise a kite trip from Kalpitiya. The village of Kalpitiya it is around 300 km north from Colombo and it is at located at the end of the Kalpitiya Peninsula. In Kalpitiya there are many resorts who organize kite trips to vella island and other kitesurfing spots.

A normal price for the kite trip to go to Vella island is around 45 euros, including lunch and drinks. The boats to Vella island are leaving from Kalpitiya laoon and it takes around 50 minutes to get to Vella island from Kalpitiya. These boats are typical fishermen boats up to 6 people and they are quite comfortable.

We leaved kalpitiya lagoon at 9:30 am at around 10:30 we where already pumping our kites in Vella. My kitesurfing trip to Vella island is one of the best kitesurfing experiences that I had in my life. I counted maximum 20 kites that day and the island is super long, so we had plenty of space for everybody. The wind in Vella island is off-shore and I saw some beginners straggling to go back to the island by edging a lot. I also saw some boats who had to rescue the kiters that were not able to come back. This kite spot in Sri Lanka is for sure not recommendable for people who is not able to kite upwind.

We have been told by the resort that we could stay in Vella island only until 4 pm as the way back to kalpitiya it takes longer because of the waves.  Finally, we left the island at 4:30 and we got to Kalpitiya around 5 pm. It is true that the way back from Vella island is quite hard as there are many waves, but I think it is worthy to go to Vella

I saw some kitesurfers who spend the night in Vella island. There are no hotels over there, only some fishermen huts who provide basic food and water. There is no electricity either, so they had to use torches at down. I can not imagine how would be the feeling to wake up in the kitesurfing paradise and be able to kite from the morning time.

Now I know why Vella island in Sri Lanka is considered the best kite spot around and one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world.
